Tattoo Aftercare
Tattoo aftercare is extremely vital to the healing process.
How your tattoo looks and heals depends on how YOU treat it.
You should keep the tattoo covered with the bandage for at least 1 hour. At this time remove the bandage, if the gauze sticks to the skin, wet the area down with cool water and remove the gauze carefully. Once the tattoo is exposed, wash thoroughly with a non fragrant white soap, such as Dove, Lever 2000, etc. and water. Be sure to remove all surface blood and rinse off all remaining soap.
-
DO NOT RE-BANDAGE TATTOO
DO NOT APPLY VASOLINE OR NEOSPORIN
DO NOT USE ALCOHOL
At this point pat lightly to dry.
-
DO NOT RUB OR SCRATCH THE TATTOO
Then with clean hands, apply a light coat of A&D OINTMENT(for Black and Grey tattoos), or TATTOO GOO(for color)for a minimum of 3 times a day, for up to 4 days only. For the next 2 weeks it is advisable to apply Dr J's Aftercare Lotion orLubriderm hand lotion.
-
DO NOT LET THE TATTOO DRY OUT
This ointment can be purchased at any local drugstore or our studio. If a rash occurs discontinue use. If the rash persists HAND LOTION can be applied. The tattoo will develop a layer of dry skin, let this fall off naturally. It peels like a sunburn.
-
DO NOT PICK AT THE TATTOO
DO NOT EXPOSE TO DIRECT SUNLIGHT FOR 2 WEEKS
DO NOT SOAK IN A POOL, SAUNA OR BATH FOR 1 WEEK
After the dry skin has fallen off, there will be a period of adjustment for the new skin. Your tattoo may look shiny or the colors may even look a bit milky. This is normal, and you should continue use of the lotion. To keep your tattoo looking good for years to come, remember the sun fades tattoos. It is advised to cover your tattoo or use a sunblock with an SPF of 30 to 45, when tanning or being outdoors. Tattooing aftercare is extremely vital to the tattoo process.
